Presenting an extensive selection of Japanese crystal-toishi (whetstones), thoughtfully curated to encompass varying abrasion levels (grit), and meticulously sourced from a distinguished Japanese establishment renowned for their expertise in kintsugi and maki-e art. These whetstones are highly specialized tools, ideally tailored for the precise polishing of urushi lacquer layers.
While using these whetstones, you have the option to employ our washi-tape or curved masking tape range, depending on your preference, to create a protective lined barrier along repaired contours, ensuring the safeguarding of ceramic finish and glaze. During the sanding process, just a few drops of water suffice. Employing wet sanding techniques effectively prevent surface scratches and contribute to a smooth, uniform finish, especially when transitioning to dry sanding.
Specifications:
Dimensions: 20 x 30 x 50mm
Optional Grit: #400, #600, #800, #1000, #1500, #2000, #3000
#400/#600 is well-suited for mugi-urushi (wheat powder & raw urushi) blended with elm (wood powder), known as kokuso (blending ratio 1:2).
#800/#1000/#1500 is ideal for sabi, a blend of tonoko powder, urushi, and water (blending ratio 1:1).
#1200 is also essential for meticulously sanding the urushi lacquer coat before a final application of precious metal powder.
#2000 and #3000 are designated for the meticulous polishing of the top layer, ensuring the finest possible finish.
Our Recommendation:
In your search for traditional and authentic charcoal options for different stages of kintsugi, we extend our offering to include a comprehensive range of Japanese charcoal products specifically designed for polishing the distinct layers of lacquer during kintsugi restoration. Much like our crystal-toishi (whetstone) collection, these charcoals have been meticulously sourced from a prominent Japanese house known for their expertise in kintsugi and maki-e art.
