Tokusa is a traditional natural abrasive used in Japanese crafts, particularly in the practice of Kintsugi. The plant, Equisetum hyemale (commonly known as horsetail), contains naturally occurring silica within its stems, giving it a fine abrasive quality ideal for delicate polishing work.
In Kintsugi restoration, Tokusa is used for gentle sanding and refining cured layers of urushi lacquer between stages of the repair process. Once dried, the hollow stems are cut into small strips and used much like extremely fine sandpaper, helping to smooth lacquer surfaces without causing deep scratches.
Artisans value Tokusa for its ability to remove tiny imperfections while leaving a very subtle scratch pattern, preparing the surface for subsequent lacquer layers or final decorative finishes.
Within the traditional Kintsugi workflow, Tokusa is commonly used alongside other natural polishing materials such as charcoal for shaping and deer horn powder for final polishing before the application of gold.
Because of its natural structure and softness, Tokusa offers a more controlled and gentle alternative to modern abrasives, making it particularly suited to delicate urushi work.
