Shibukoshigami is a traditional Japanese filter paper treated with kakishibu (persimmon tannin), a natural coating that strengthens the fibres and improves durability when exposed to liquids. This treatment makes the paper more tear-resistant, mildly antibacterial, and suitable for repeated filtering in traditional craft processes.
In urushi work, Shibukoshigami is commonly used to filter lacquer before application, helping remove small particles and impurities to ensure a smooth, refined finish. The tannin treatment allows the paper to remain strong even when wet, making it particularly well suited for artisan lacquer work and other traditional Japanese practices.
